Creative Profile – Wallaceburg Brass Quintet
The Wallaceburg Brass Quintet began as an offshoot of the Wallaceburg Concert Band. Dan White assembled four other brass players to create the ensemble. The benefit of a quintet over a concert band is that it is far easier to transport and the parts challenge all five musicians as every part is exposed.
WBQ formed in 2018 and, following the lead of the Wallaceburg Concert Band, has been providing free performances since that year. WBQ began playing at the Wallaceburg cenotaph for Remembrance day and at Wallaceburg seniors residents 2 – 3 times/ year.
During covid the ensemble began recording and creating YouTube videos to entertain audiences as live performances were not possible. There are currently 7 videos from this group on YouTube.
In the past two years the group has added a number of performances to their slate; performing at elementary schools, for the CK Arts and Culture Heroes event, churches in Wallaceburg and Blenheim area.
Last June the ensemble decided to offer a concert in Wallaceburg and it evolved quickly into the “Wallaceburg Brass Quintet and Friends Concert”. This gig featured the quintet but also invited other ensembles from within the WCB, including a clarinet choir, flute trio, sax duet, low brass trio and piano flute duet. The group and friends performed again at Christmas and is currently preparing for a spring concert in May. This concert will have a new addition, the Wadukes ukulele ensemble will be performing two songs as and they will be joining the combined ensembles for one final chart.
You can see WBQ and friends May 25 at 7 pm at Trinity United Church.
WBQ will also be joining the lineup with two charts during the St Andrews Saturday at 7 series on June 1st in Chatham.
